The Comox Valley Minor Hockey Association is accepting name ideas for its rebranding project.

Last year, the association and K’omoks First Nation decided to replace the CVMHA Chiefs name and logo with an image ‘that does not invoke Indigenous stereotypes that caricature Indigenous culture,’ as stated in a letter.

The two sides agreed to have a new name, logo and team attire no later than the start of the 2024/25 season.

“We are very hopeful to have this implemented for the 2022/23 season, however, the KFN has granted us until the 2024/25 season to complete the transition as this type of project requires major funds and co-ordination for apparel replacement,” CVMHA director Trevor Pritoula said.

The public and association members are invited to submit a name — with or without a brief explanation — for consideration. Finalists will be selected by a rebranding committee, and used to create a logo for final selection.

Email submissions to rebrandcvmha@gmail.com by 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 26.

The association is also seeking a title sponsor to help raise funds for the project. In return, the sponsor would have their name displayed on every new jersey.
