Comox Valley Strikers U18 girls win provincial volleyball championship

The Comox Valley Strikers U18 girls are provincial champions.

The Strikers won the 2019 Volleyball BC Division 3 championship Monday, April 22, at the Richmond Olympic Oval.

The girls defeated Victoria’s Iron Maidens A in straight sets (25-21, 25-21) and Vancouver’s Sonic Esco 2-1 (25-21, 21-25, 15-6) in pool play, then beat Burnaby’s Focus Inferno in straight sets in a crossover match to set up a quarter-final rematch with the Iron Maidens.

The Victoria squad took the first set 25-20 before the Strikers stormed back, winning the second set 25-16 and dominating the tiebreaker, 15-3.

The first four matches were all played Sunday.

The Strikers met the Powell River Aces in a semifinal, Monday morning, and advanced to the championship match with a straight-sets victory (25-17, 25-23).

The Strikers faced Focus Inferno in the championship match, and disposed of them in straight sets once again (25-21, 25-22) to claim the championship.

The Strikers include Lea Waeber, Rianna Pluym, Makayla Thexton, Gracie Walls, Ellie Bonar, Georgia Veale, Malissa Tran, Soren Caine and Mia Landry. Darren Mifsud is the coach.
