The Comox Valley Kickers women’s rugby team kicked off the season with a 39-21 win over Victoria’s Castaway Wanderers, Saturday at Cumberland Village Park.

It was a competitive game with plenty of back and forth action. Utilizing their speed, Natalie Nguyen, Paula Simpson, Kristianna Bouwers and Tyra Schaad each scored a try. With some hard hits and offloads, Karli MacFarlane, Taya Gagnon and Keely Orrick added points on the board. Simpson also added two successful conversions.

“We have new coaches this year, JP Lussier and Thyssen de Goede, and lots of new faces on our squad,” said Kickers captain Nguyen. “I wasn’t sure how the first game would go, but all the ladies stepped up and played hard. The practices have been paying off. Our passing was on point and we kept the pressure on the opposing side. I am excited to see how the team continues to improve and grow. This is a great start to the season.”

The senior Kickers women’s and men’s teams are in Cowichan Saturday. It will be the men’s first game of the season.

Both sides continue to recruit players for the season. No experience is needed.

Practices are at Cumberland Village Park on Mondays and Thursdays from 6:30—8 p.m.
