Comox Valley youth rugby teams kick off season

The first official games of the season Oct. 17 saw Rapids Rugby athletes score some beautiful trys and make some big hits.

The first official games of the season Oct. 17 saw Rapids Rugby athletes score some beautiful trys and make some big hits.

Under-13 boys played a big, strong Cowichan Rugby Club side in a three game 7’s format. The Rapids lost two and tied one with one try scored by Hunter Froehlich and two trys scored by Clark Breuer. Next weekend, the boys travel to Victoria to play the Castaway Wanderers at Windsor Park.

The U14 girls played against the Cowichan Rugby Club in Duncan. Their 50-25 win saw Gill Galik use her speed to score six trys while Addie Brassington, Riley Morton and Kolbie Rosse scored the rest to win the game.

The U16 girls, also at Cowichan, won their 10-aside game 45-22. Sadie Williams wore down the defence by scoring four trys, Shayla Stiggant scored two and Sofia Mcphee scored one. Katie Hartig made five conversation kicks, adding 10 points to the final score.

The U19 girls lost a hard fought game against Cowichan 36-20. Sienna Stigant had some powerful runs to put two trys on the scoreboard while Emma Gootendorst and Abby Underhill each scored one.

Next week the U19 girls travel to Castaway Wanderers alongside the U13 boys.

Rapids Rugby is a grassroots, community-based youth rugby league for athletes seven- to 18 years. The goal is to provide a high quality rugby environment to provide every opportunity to enjoy the sport and to reach their maximum potential as athletes.
