The Isfeld Ice senior boys basketball team played in their first tournament, the Royal Bay Gravel Pit Classic, on the weekend in Victoria.

The first game of the year put the Ice up against Esquimalt. The first game nerves and jitters were on full display. Turnovers, missed passes and missed layups took over the first part of the game. Once the team settled down and got rolling, the Ice had a 50-28 half-time lead. All members had some good playing time, and the Ice finished on top 82-52.

In the semi-final game, Isfeld defeated Spectrum of Victoria 66-43. Again, all players received playing time.

Next up was the final against Vic High. As the tournament wore on, the confidence and togetherness of the players continued to grow. The ice came out blazing in the first quarter and led by 16 points. The team continued to dominate the rest of the way and were crowned tournament champs with a 91-57 victory.

Coach Kent Milburn said Grade 11s Liam Robertson and Finley Lam, along with Grade 12 Jasper Halvorson did a great job defending and rebounding. Senior guards Temwa Mtawali, Kye Kotapski Tinga and Karman Kandola had super weekends.

The boys host their home tournament this weekend at Isfeld. Games start at 11 a.m. Friday. The ice takes to the court against Gulf Islands at 3:30 p.m. Games will continue on Saturday. The final is at 5 p.m.
