Nanaimo hosted the President’s Cup on May 17, which is social day of bowling with the executives of the zone clubs competing for a trophy – no money or medals involved.
Each club sends two mixed triples teams, made up of executive and committee members. The Courtenay contingent of April Gilchrist, Gaynor Bereza, Myrna Viers, Pat Norrad, Peter Harding and Archie Harris won three of their four games and inched by the zone group in ends won, thus successfully defending their 2011 performance.
Carrying on with a busy week, seven Courtenay teams competed in the Anderton Nurseries Mixed Triples on May 19-20 in Courtenay. Ellen Presley represented the sponsor to give first place honours to Parksville’s Gary Robinson (president of Bowls Canada), Ryan Uchman, and Lynn Chwartecki, winners of all four of their games.
Courtenay’s Archie Harris, Al Hopwood, and Melie Ursulom had no losses but won three and tied one game for second place. Third went to Parksville’s Mick Banks with Rick and Lynne Britz; fourth to Qualicum's Dave Childs with Kay and Charles McIntyre; fifth to Courtenay’s Vern Greenhill with Rick Quibell and Mary Mulligan; sixth to Parksville's Dave Muir, Kate Wilson and Dave Cole.
Other teams participating were from Port Alberni, Nanaimo and Powell River. Thanks to the greens crew for a wonderful surface even through the rain and sprinklers, and to the lades in the kitchen whose hospitality was awesome.
Three local teams will be off to Nanaimo on May 26-27 for the Centennial Mixed Fours and yet another exciting weekend. June 2-3 will be seminar time with Steve Forrest for some information of good deliveries and strategy. Sign up with Pete Harding for an informative session to improve your game.
