Vanier Secondary hosts the senior boys 3A Island volleyball championships on Friday and Saturday.

In Friday’s round robin, Vanier plays Reynolds of Victoria at 1:15 p.m., Nanaimo District Secondary School (NDSS) at 2:30 p.m. and Victoria’s Mt. Douglas at 5 p.m.

The other pool includes Claremont, Dover Bay, Oak Bay and Belmont.

The gold medal game is Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

Coach Jamie Barnie said the senior boys have had a strong season with a 16-2-2 record heading into the North Island seeding day last Friday at Vanier. The home team lost both best-of-three matches in three sets, first against NDSS (losing 18-16 in the third set) and then against Dover Bay (losing 15-13 in the third set).

“The team is keen to learn from the losses and to put on a strong showing this weekend, including a rematch in pool play against the NDSS team,” Barnie said. “The team is comprised of 13 players, all of whom are multi-sport athletes, with a different primary sport than volleyball, including mountain biking, baseball, basketball, handball, golf, karate and soccer. It has been great to see them come together as a group of friends working towards team goals.”

Spectators are welcome this weekend at Vanier, but must sign in declaring they have completed a COVID health check, wear masks and follow the posted COVID protocols.

The senior girls volleyball team at Vanier finished fourth at North Islands. They compete at the Island tourney this weekend at Dover Bay in Nanaimo.
