Carter Woods of Cumberland won a World Cup mountain bike race Saturday in Altstadt, Germany.

The 19-year-old — who is the youngest rider on the Norco Factory team — propelled himself from fourth to cross the finish first in the Under-23 men’s category. It was the first UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) Mountain Bike World Cup race of the season.

“It was a great weekend,” Woods said by email. “I was rolling in the lead group all race and attacked on the last lap. I had confidence coming into the world cups from some great racing the weeks before.”

Last month, Woods kicked off the competitive season with a seventh-place finish at a race in Italy.

Earlier in the year, Woods was named junior male athlete of the year by Sport BC. When not racing under sponsor Norco, he competes at world championships as a member of Canada’s national team.
