Abbie Simms scored once, Camryn Curts assisted twice and Danielle Robertson earned the W in net for the Thompson Rivers University women’s soccer team on Sunday. The trio of former Upper Island Riptide players each played a key role in a 3-1 home victory over the University of Northern B.C. Timberwolves.

TRU lost its season opener Saturday, 2-1 to the MacEwan University Griffins of Edmonton.

In Sunday’s win, Curts got things going by sending a through ball to rookie Chantal Gammie, who made it 1-0 in the eighth minute. Simms put TRU up by two with a header off a Curts’ cross in the 27th minute. TRU went up by three on a penalty shot before UNBC made it 3-1 shortly before half time.

Robertson made two big saves, including a one-hander in the 80th minute, to preserve the victory. Curts, who hit the crossbar with a shot from the top of the 18-yard box in the second half, earned ‘Leader of the Pack’ player-of-the-match honours.

“We came out strong and capitalized on our opportunities,” Curts said. “In the second half, it was a bit scary but we kept it together and pushed it hard to get the win. We had five rookies out there yesterday (Saturday). I think we shook off the nerves and did better today.”

She was thrilled to set up longtime teammate Simms for her first Canada West goal.

“We were reminiscing about our old times back in VIPL. She said she saw me coming and said she had to go to the net to make sure it made it there. I thought that was awesome.

“It was hard in the middle,” Curts added. “Every team we play against has a very strong middle. It’s very difficult but you have to have the mindset to go into every tackle and give it your all to get the victory. I seem to be adjusting pretty well for my second year in Canada West. I try and do my best out there.”

The WolfPack is on the road this weekend for matches against the University of Alberta in Edmonton and the Mount Royal Cougars in Calgary. Their next home match is Sept. 29 against Trinity Western University.
