The Comox Valley flavour of the Thompson Rivers University (Kamloops) women’s soccer team was evident in the first win of the season for the WolfPack.

Camryn Curts, a first-year midfielder, scored the lone goal Sunday in Saskatchewan against the University of Regina Cougars. Following a turnover in front of the Cougars’ net, Curts fired a low shot that beat keeper Ashton Lowry in the 76th minute. It was the second goal of the Canada West season for Curts, who was named TRU player of the match.

“She was a real workhorse in the middle of the park for the full 90 minutes,“ head coach Kelly Shantz said.

Danielle Robertson, a rookie goalkeeper, earned her first Canada West shutout.

“She was absolutely super,” Shantz said. “She made some show stopper saves in the second half when it was scoreless to help preserve the victory.”

Shantz noted that Olivia Bates, another first-year player from the Comox Valley, was effective on the back line for the full 90 minutes.

The WolfPack women’s squad bumped its record to 1-3.

“Couldn’t be prouder of the team,” Shantz said. “We fully deserved this win. We didn’t dominate but we were certainly in the game and probably outplayed them for most of it. The team has come a long way in nine days when we played UNBC (Prince George) and didn’t look like we belonged. Every single practice and every single game since then we have shown tremendous improvement. We showed a lot of heart and drive for being on the road.”

The team plays its home opener Saturday, Sept. 23 against the UBC Thunderbirds.
