CV Curling Club teams with pharmacy to start league

The Comox Valley Curling Club and Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy are collaborating for the first time and announce the Sunday Fun Open Curling League. This league is specifically for those relatively new to the great roaring game of curling, with the focus on fun and meeting new friends as much as it is on instruction and learning the sport.

Following the winning formula introduced last year of the highly successful Gladstone Friday Fun League, which now has a long waiting list, the Sunday Fun Open League also runs in shorter sessions to allow easier and more casual participation for curlers of all experience and skill levels, with no gender restrictions. The league runs weekly on Sundays at 5: 30 p.m. in two 10-week sessions. The first session is Sept. 30. Join for 10 weeks, or all 20 weeks.

“In the recent past, someone interested in curling would take a lesson or a clinic, and then be faced with the prospect of having to find a team, then join a league and commit to a 25-week curling season. And that is only if there is room in a league to begin with,” CVCC manager Keith Parry said. “Besides the lack of options and long commitment, new curlers were then faced with playing with and against those with years of experience. So it was intimidating. The Medicine Shoppe Fun Open League aims to shatter all of those obstacles to participating in what is an amazingly fun and social sport.”

The Medicine Shoppe’s owners Darryl Hunt and Catherine McCann explain why they wanted to help found this program: “We fell in love on the ice and with the game. We’ve volunteered many hours over the past three decades in every facet of the sport. Every aspect of The Medicine Shoppe is designed with health in mind. Following our Life Cycle, and Life Walk initiatives, supporting curling as a healthy activity makes perfect sense. It’s one of the sports you can participate in for a lifetime. ”
