A group of high school basketball players from Denmark visited the Comox Valley this week for a series of friendly games against local players at Vanier Secondary. A total of 38 boys comprised three EVN Denmark teams, and 17 girls made up two teams.

The girls played on Victoria Day, Monday. The first encounter was a close game against a local side of players in Grades 8-10.

In the second game, another young Valley team faced a well-coached EVN squad of experienced girls who won easily.

On Tuesday, a local Grade 9 boys team defeated the EVN school’s C team of U17 players in the first game of the day. The second game matched a combined Isfeld/Vanier group of Grade 9s and 10s against the Danes, who won a close one. The third game was between Vanier’s Grade 11s and EVN’s A team. It was close and low-scoring, with EVN prevailing by six.

This was the fourth time the Danish student athletes have visited the Valley.

“This relationship has been going on now for nine years,” event organizer Larry Street said. “A great cultural experience for all kids on both sides.”

Street thanks all the host families who billeted the visitors.

“We look forward to their return in two years.”
