The Comox Valley Disc Golf Club recently hosted its first disc golf tournament of the season, The Cheshire Cup, at Fir Meadows disc golf course. This event raised $300 and nine bags of food items for the Comox Valley Food Bank, reports tournament director Jim Cunningham.

Despite damp and windy conditions, a field of 24 players from Vancouver Island competed for fun and prizes on a modified course that challenged all. The April Fool’s-themed tourney featured a tricky ‘mandatory’ on all 18 holes, and all golfers had up to 10 mulligans to retry tee shots over the two-round day; most were gratefully used up by the competitors.

In the Amateur division, Mike Boulianne finished on top with a total score of 104; second place went to Sean Campbell, and third to Adam Amlani. Tara Lynch won in the women’s division with 114, followed by Alesha Bird and Colleen McDougall. With an astonishing score of 88, youngster Matt Dixon triumphed in the Open division, with Miguel Alvarado and Tim Forrest in second and third. Players in all divisions were eligible for draw prizes, and the traditional ‘Closest To Pin’ mini-event was won by Chris Vance.

The CVDGA is grateful to their sponsors, BC Disc Sports (discbc.ca), SURECopy (surecopy.com), The Disc Cellar (disccellar.ca), and Island Disc Golf, for providing services and prizes for the tournament. They also wish to thank 3L Developments, Inc. for graciously allowing the Fir Meadows course on their property.

Disc golf, also known as Frisbee golf, is a game increasing in popularity in the Comox Valley, attracting new players of all ages. The Comox Valley features four disc golf courses. Village Park in Comox is a beginner-friendly, nine-hole short course, featuring official chain baskets.

Fir Meadows, located near Stotan Falls, has multiple tees that challenge and reward players of all ability levels over 23 holes, and courses in Cumberland and near the Browns River are also in use. All courses are free to play.

Disc golf requires little more than a Frisbee and friends to play, and is a great way to get outside in the Comox Valley. The Comox Valley Disc Golf Association will be hosting more tournaments and events over the summer. At Fir Meadows, there are also drop-in club days on Saturday at 1 p.m. with prizes, and the club regularly carpools to other courses on the Island, and to tournaments. Visit cvdiscgolf.com for information about playing disc golf in the Valley and elsewhere.
