The Comox Valley Evolution U18 girls’ rep soccer team were gearing up for their cup playdowns when they travelled to Port Alberni for a match on Sunday, Feb. 13.

Despite the cold, wet weather the girls turned up ready to play and poured on lots of offensive pressure right from the beginning whistle. Early into the game Natalie deLange made a nice crossover to Rebecca Williams who launched the ball off the crossbar and into the back of the net.

The Evolution (sponsored by Chatters Hair Salon) had several more good scoring opportunities throughout the half but Port Alberni’s keeper made some great saves and no more goals were scored. Minutes before the half, there was a big scuffle in front of the Evolution’s net and an Alberni player tapped the ball into the net to make it a 1-1 tie at half time.

In the opening minute of the second half Jillian Paton scored to make it 2-1 Evolution. Port Alberni’s keeper had to leave the game after she ran into the post and injured her nose. The injury time-out seemed to slow both teams’ momentum and the play throughout the second half wasn’t as intense as it was in the first.

The Evolution did execute a lot of good passes throughout the game and Paton scored a second goal to make the final score 3-1. The Evolution has two league games left before playing their match against the South Island champions to determine who will win the berth to the Provincials in July.
