Final Paddlers’ Club meeting of 2015-2016 season

The Comox Valley Paddlers’ Club welcomes John Kimantas, owner of Wild Coast Magazine as guest speaker at their May meeting.

The Comox Valley Paddlers’ Club welcomes John Kimantas, owner of Wild Coast Magazine as guest speaker at their May meeting.

In his presentation ‘Silly Things I Have Done in a Kayak’, Kimantas reflects on 15 years of paddling and shares a list of 10 things best not done while kayaking. It is not the stuff of heroes and legends. Instead it is more about what happens when a journalist trades pen for paddle and hits the water to document the British Columbia coastline — traveling at a pace of about three knots through whatever hurdles Mother Nature might send in his way. It is an irreverent look at some of his more memorable moments on the water, even if not his proudest!

Kimantas serves various roles at Wild Coast Magazine, among them editor and publisher, but most importantly is the walker of Yoshi, Wild Coast Publishing’s skipper, a fox terrier-cross rescued from certain death from a shelter in Orange County, Calif. He is also the author of six kayaking and recreation guide books, and two atlases, including the Wild Coast series that led to all of this silliness. He is an accomplished expedition kayaker and hiker, and would do more if not for having to run an office and walk a dog every day.

There will be copies of Wild Coast publications available for sale at the meeting. Further information is available at www.thewildcoast.ca

The presentation starts at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 5 at the Lion’s Den, 1729 Comox Ave. in Comox (Nordin Street behind the Pearl Ellis Art Gallery). Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

The presentation will be followed by a short break and the club’s business meeting. The event is free.  Non-members are welcome to attend.

This will be the final ‘on shore’ meeting for the 2015/2016 winter season. Meetings resume Thursday,  Oct. 6, and are held the first Thursday of each month until May, 2017.

In the meantime, club members will meet on the water for day, evening and multi-day paddles.
