For the first time in nine years, Vancouver Island was able to send four teams to the West Coast Classic Ringette Tournament, last weekend in Richmond. The sport has been growing steadily in the Comox Valley — as was reflected in the effort and team play at the tournament.
This was the first tournament for most of the U10 team, and their first game of the year. There are no other ringette associations on Vancouver Island, so the kids face tough competition at tournaments. They played with heart, with integrity and with laughter for the little mistakes they made along the way.
The U14 team, the Currents, won one game, tied two and lost one, narrowly missing a semi-final berth. Despite a number of injuries in the last game, the Currents tied the top-tiered team. Their coach, Arran Arthur, described them as “a wonderfully dedicated group of kids that exemplify great sportsmanship and teamwork.”
The open team was comprised of players from various parts of the Island. This was their first time playing together this year. Though the team lost their games, they put up a strong fight against tough opponents.
For the masters team, this year was golden. The squad won all four games leading up to the final but had their work cut out for them against the Surrey Shooters. Thanks to goals from Kyra Humphrey and Helen Oliphant, the Island team won 2-1 and came home with another banner.
