Glacier Kings kept it clean; Mitch Ball named VIJHL rookie of the year

The Comox Valley Glacier Kings picked up two awards when the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League handed out its year-end hardware in Victoria on Sunday.

 

The Comox Valley Glacier Kings picked up two awards when the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League handed out its year-end hardware in Victoria on Sunday.

The Yetis were recognized as the least penalized team while Mitch Ball received rookie of the year honours.

The Glacier Kings amassed only 787 minutes in 44 regular season games while finishing third overall.

Ball, a 17-year-old forward from Powell River, put up 25 goals and 23 assists in 42 regular season games and added two points (1 goal, one assist) in eight playoff appearances.

His 48 points was third best on the Yetis and eighth best overall.

Other league awards went to: Cole Thomson (Kerry Park Islanders) unsung hero; Brent Baltus (Oceanside Generals) most sportsmanlike player; Corey Koop) Victoria Cougars) top goaltender; Mike Scarborough (Peninsula Panthers) top defenceman; Evan Campbell (Peninsula Panthers) top scorer; Adam Steenbergen (Victoria Cougars) MVP; Victoria Cougars regular season champions.

The Capital City Cats are hoping to add the playoff championship to their 2010-11 resume. They lead the best-of-seven final 3-1 over the Peninsula Panthers.
