Happy’s Source for Sports Midget AAA Chiefs played a pair of minor hockey games over the weekend.
On Saturday they were in Port Alberni to play against a very strong team with netminders who have a knack for winning games for them. This Saturday was no different as the Chief outshot Port Alberni 2-1 to win the game 7-4 with an empty net goal at the end.
Port Alberni opened the scoring late in the first but it wasn’t long until Jordan Crisp made a nice play in front of the net to tie the game on a pass from Myles Powell and Jed Martin.
Port Alberni scored first again in the second, and once again the Chiefs came right back a minute later to even it up with a goal from Kolby Koshack assisted by Adam Norman.
Three minutes later Dave Marshall put the Chiefs ahead (assisted by Alex Mullan and Powell).
A minute later Port Alberni responded to tie the game again.
With five minutes left in the period, Kevin Morgan scored the go-ahead goal on an assist from Declan Garrood. With only three minutes left in the second, Port Alberni got another to tie the game 4-4.
The third period belonged to the Chiefs as they had three unanswered goals. The first came from Marshall (his second of the game assisted by Brook Trainor and Crisp).
The second was a nifty little goal from Mullan assisted by Marshall and Nigel Hutcheson. With only 53 seconds left Kolshack extinguished any hopes of a Port Alberni rally with an empty netter. Josh Machan was strong between the posts.
On Sunday the Chiefs played host to Saanich and managed another 7-4 victory.
The first period was scoreless with some great end-to-end action. The second period featured eight goals, and finished in a 4-4 tie.
Powell, Martin, Trainor and Hutcheson all scored for the Chiefs. Cody Eliason and Mullan each had a pair of assists while Trainor, Crisp and Hutcheson each picked up one helper.
Once again the Chiefs dominated the third, scoring all three goals to win 7-4. The game winner came on the power play from Garrood assisted by Kye Kendal and Trainor. Mullan scored five minutes later assisted by Garrood, and Trainor closed out the game on a nice pass from Norman.
The Chiefs next game is Saturday at Sports Centre Arena No. 1 at 12:15 p.m. against Juan de Fuca.
