The Island Road Series has come to a close.

The final race of the season was the Bazan Bay 5k last month in Sidney. Along with the Comox Valley RV Half Marathon, it’s one of the premier events of the Island Series, attracting nearly 500 participants this year.

Coach Neil Holm led the Comox Valley Road Runners by winning his age group and clocking a blazing time of 17:11. Hot on his heels was Jonathan Noel in 17:16. Rob Kelly also won his age group, finishing in 18:36. Seconds later was Danny Keyes, who finished second in the same category. Keith Wakelin was able to edge out Derek Brenchley by 11 seconds. They placed fourth and fifth in their category. Wayne Crowe also ran well to place seventh in the same age division.

The top local female finisher was Kamma Wiggins, who ran 21:46 to take seventh in her division. She was followed closely by Steve Blacklock and Darrell Fisher, who both came in under 23 minutes. Sam Knowles cracked the 25-minute barrier to place sixth in his category. Laura Wyatt took eighth in her category in 26 minutes flat. Just behind Wyatt was Cindy Blackmore who finished ninth in the same category. Leslie Dargie finished in just over 30 minutes, while Tom Munro ran just under 38 minutes, and Bev Luker came in just over 41 minutes.

Many runners now turn their attention to the trails. Be sure to check out the next local running event, The Cumby, a trail race that includes 25k, 13k and 5.5k distances. This is a fun event that raises money for the Cumberland Community Forest Society. To register, volunteer or find out more, visit cvrr.ca.
