Organizers and players were pleasantly surprised when the 2012 Comox Valley Disc Golf Ice Bowl failed to live up to its frozen moniker.
"We were expecting a ton of rain, but on Sunday, Feb. 18 the sky cleared and the sun broke out and stayed with us for the duration of the (event)," said tournament director Craig Dieno. "We could have had sleet, rain, fog and or heavy winds – we’ve had it all before – but this year was not icy at all," Dieno said.
"We had a good crew out playing for the benefit of the Comox Valley Food Bank. We raised $240 and about 120 pounds of food, all going for their early spring needs. Jeff Hampton and Jose from the food bank arrived and played in the tournament," Dieno said.
"It was a very pleasurable day assisting them for their program. The need is great – just last week they put out 268 bags helping 254 adults and 129 children. Way to go, Jeff and company."
As the winds were light and the sun was warm there were some good scores. The team of Brandon Sparkes and Reiner Nicholai took the Ice Bowl title with a score of -5, some very good throws there. The Closest to the Pin was won by Robert St. John.
"Everybody enjoyed the beachfront layout at Kin Beach Park
and hot dogs over the open fire," Dieno said. "This Ice Bowl was one of over 250 tourneys taking place around the world to raise support for food banks. The Comox Valley Disc Golf Club feels honoured to help out," said Dieno.
