Island Spirit Sports All Star Cheerleaders wrapped up their competitive season with an excellent showing at the Sea to Sky International Cheerleading Championships in Vancouver, April 1-3.

For the second year in a row the junior team brought home third place in a very competitive division. Competing this year in the small Junior level 1 division, the team had two excellent performances over the weekend. Completing a challenging routine on day one, they found themselves in second place. A great run on day two however was not enough to boost their scores, and the team finished third.

The youth 11-and-under team ran two days of deduction free routines, and with solid tumbling and stunting skills, the young team impressed. Although they finished less than only 1.75 points out of third, the team finished sixth a very close division.

The Island Spirit Senior team, competing in a tough senior level 3 division, struggled on day one, with deductions taking them out of contention. However, determined to finish their competitive season on a high note, the team ran their best routine of the season on day two to finish the year.

Individual honours also went to 13-year-old Tomekia Edwards, who represented ISS in the junior individual division. She finished fifth in a competitive field, despite not including her most difficult tumbling skills.

Videos of the routines can be viewed online at www.facebook.com/islandspiritsports.

The Sea to Sky International Cheerleading Championships celebrated their fifth year with more than 130 All Star teams from across Canada and the U.S. Northwest competing at the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre.

Island Spirit Sports is now looking forward to its sixth season as “the home of cheerleading in the Comox Valley.”

Now settling into their new practice facility at the Comox Community Centre, athletes will spend the spring and summer continuing to train in advance of next season. This is the best time for new athletes to join the program, and get a head start on their training.
