Cubs' pitcher Brian Doherty dies suddenly at 50 years of age

The Komox Masters Real Baseball League lost one of its mainstays with the sudden passing of Brian Doherty on Nov. 25.

The 50-year-old from Campbell River was a fixture on the Cubs' pitching staff for 10 years, helping them win the league championship in 2006.

"He was a great guy and threw a great knuckleball," said Sy Pederson of the Cubs, who caught many games for Doherty.

His obituary in the Campbell River Mirror notes Doherty  was an avid sports fan and outdoor enthusiast, whose love for both guided his choice of career and leisure time.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. at the United Church, 415 Pinecrest St., Campbell River. Reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Campbell River Minor Baseball.
