Masters soccer underway

Comox Valley 30+ side kicks off season with pair of wins

The Comox Valley Masters Soccer men’s 30+ team kicked off the 2017/18 season with a 1-0 win Aug. 27 in Campbell River. Justin Black scored the lone goal and also earned partial shutout honours, sharing goaltending duties with Phil Schalm.

The team bumped its record to 2-0 win a 3-2 win Sunday in Port Alberni. Goals came from Black, Michal Wyka and Andrew Scott, who scored in the dying minutes.

Last year, the North Island Masters League dropped the age minimum from to 30 to 35. Locally, there are about 40 players in the 30-45 age range.

The opening game of the season for the masters 45+ team is Sept. 17 at home against Qualicum. Kickoff is noon at Woodcote Park in Courtenay.

The 55+ team, struggling for players, had to cancel its first game Aug. 27. The team is slated to play in Nanaimo Sept. 24.

Any footballers on the far side of 30 looking to play are asked to email rquilter@hotmail.com, or just show up Wednesdays at Woodcote at 6 p.m.

•The Comox Valley United Div. 1 men’s soccer team opened its season Saturday in Nanaimo.

Their home opener is Saturday, Sept. 16 versus VI Wave. Kickoff is 6 p.m. at the Vanier turf.
