Nolan Wirth, a teenage soccer player who has grown up in the Comox Valley, was recently invited to join the MLS Vancouver Whitecaps residency program. This program has been established by the Whitecaps in order to identify and develop young Canadian and international players who demonstrate strong skills and abilities.

“This is a great achievement for a player who has gone through our system,” said Matthew Blecha, president of the Comox Valley United Soccer Club. “ We’re delighted, as an organization, that we were able to offer him the opportunity to hone his skills.”

The residency program which takes place in Burnaby is described as an intensive soccer experience that promotes both education and soccer. Being invited to take part in this program is testament to Wirth's ability and natural aptitude for soccer, Blecha added.

"As a goalie with exceptional talent, Nolan has captured the eye of coaches and scouts throughout his youth career. Moving up through the CVUSC house league, Nolan played for the High Voltage U12 Select team and backstopped them to a silver medal at the Provincial Championships in 2007.

"The following year he lead his team to a silver medal at the Coastal Cup competition and another appearance at the Provincials. In his final year playing with the CVUSC Red Strike, Nolan and his team captured the Island Invitational Cup, Blecha noted.

"In his on-going quest to improve his game, Nolan in 2009 joined the Super Y-League team based in Victoria but didn’t play due to injury. However he was eventually selected as the starting keeper for the Upper Island Metro team that plays the highest level of youth soccer in the province," Blecha noted.

In recent years Wirth has played for the U15 and U16 Provincial teams and the National Training Centre program. He will be travelling this summer to St. John’s, Newfoundland to compete in the National championships.

"As an organization devoted to promoting soccer at all levels," said Blecha, "having one of our local players rise to the top gives all of our volunteers a real lift and highlights the value of our program here in the Valley."
