Twenty-four of the best junior golfers on Vancouver Island teed it up at Glacier Greens Golf Club for the annual Slegg Lumber Ryder Cup matches on Sept. 29-30.

Vancouver Island is divided into two zones for Junior Golf. Duncan and south is Zone 5; west and north of Duncan including Powell River is Zone 6. Each year 12 juniors from each zone meet and compete for the coveted Slegg Lumber Ryder Cup. The participants are treated to a fine tee gift (this year a golf carry bag) and meals from monies raised at the annual Slegg Lumber Pro-Am tournament held each spring at Glacier Greens.

After the best-ball matches on Saturday Zone 6 led 4-2. Sunday morning was the alternate shot format with each zone winning three points. Zone 6 was leading the event 7-5. Following lunch the singles matches were played. The competition was very close with some ending as ties and winning a half point for each team.

After the last putt had dropped and the scores tallied Zone 6 won 11-10. Comox Slegg Lumber store manager Gary Wood welcomed both teams to the Valley, presented the Slegg Cup to the Zone 6 team and congratulated them on returning the cup to the North Island.

Representing Zone 6 were Terran Berger (Glacier Greens), Alex Webber and Matthew Irvine (Crown Isle), Mark Valliere (Crown Isle/Nanaimo), Josh Legge (Myrtle Point), Michelle Waters and Cole Morrison (Pheasant Glen), Shirin Anjarwalla and Zach Anderson (Nanaimo) and Emily Adams, Dallas Jones, Gavin Hollebakken (Mount Brenton).

Representing Zone 5 were Haley Kruse (Victoria G.C.), Matthew Broughton and Darren Day (Royal Colwood), Naomi Ko, Keaton Gudz and Alex Cartwright (Olympic View), Mirai Hayashi and Jack Lilly (Uplands), Lexi Kondrak (Cedar Hill), Andrew Funk (Glen Meadows), Tristan Mandur (Arbutus Ridge) and Callum Davison (Cowichan).

"All the young players and their families thank the Glacier Greens Golf Club and Slegg Lumber for their continued support of this excellent program," said Glacier Greens spokesperson Len Doyle.
