Several locals win medals at jiu-jitsu event

Seven students from the Courtenay-based Academy of Martial Arts competed in a Brazilian jiu-jitsu competition, Aug. 17 in Richmond. The Jiu-Jitsu Ohana III was held at the Richmond Olympic Oval. It featured single elimination format for adults and masters, and double elimination for kids and juvenile.

It featured single elimination format for adults and masters, and double elimination for kids and juvenile.

Chris “Bukwas” Anderson won a gold, silver and two bronze medals. Raffael Tonazzi won two golds, Cullen Kendall and Mitch Kirk each won a gold, Akash Nanda won a bronze and Cameron Roe won a pair of bronze medals.

Scott Erikson also competed. Though he didn’t medal, academy owner Bill Fraser said Erikson lost by very close scores in two exciting matches.
