Talent showcase a hit

The Comox Valley Glacier Kings hosted the 2010-11 Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League All-Star and Prospects games in style this past Sunday at the Comox Valley Sports Centre.

Marsha Webb of the Glacier Kings said, “The games were well attended and generously supported by our local businesses. The success of the entire event — which included the banquet, the VIP Hospitality Room and the games — was the result of our tremendous volunteers. Without them this would have been an impossibility.”

Performing the ceremonial faceoff at both games was Corey Waugh, a local resident and former Glacier King who is now in a wheelchair after a motor vehicle accident left him paralyzed.

“(Corey) was a guest speaker at the banquet and even though he was so nervous he did a great job. Very inspirational and heartfelt. I saw a few people wiping away a tear,” Webb said.

Other guest speakers at the banquet were Powell River Kings head coach Kent Lewis, BCAHA Jr. B director Brian Harrison and VIJHL president Greg Batters.

“We had the Brian Rice Toyota Atom A (players) escort the players onto the ice. They were great. There was no escort for the Westshore team for the All-Stars but they did have two players participate in the Prospects game.”

The Prospects team escorts included Isaac L’Arrivee, Logan Nijhoff, Reid Taylor, Aleko Karamanis, Kevin Franceschini, Keenan Toal, Thomas Green and Iain Gillard.

All-Star team escorts included Gabe Schovanek, Ryan Novecosky, Jordan Neufeld, Jackson Dyke, Andre Sutter, Ian Rutledge and Evan Barker.

Another highlight of the day was having the Comox Valley Minor Hockey Pre-Initiation players (four- and five-year-olds) skating between periods at both games.
