Time has arrived for Comox Cup

Downtown Comox will be bustling on Father’s Day Weekend.

The NHL playoffs may be over but exciting hockey action will continue this Father’s Day weekend in downtown Comox when hundreds of athletes and their supporters arrive for the Comox Cup.

Organizer Dawn Stevens from Comox Recreation says, “ I’m excited about the change in venue this year and excited about this becoming a community event that involves much more than hockey.”

Comox BIA president James Robinson says, “The Comox Cup provides an amazing opportunity for participants, visitors and local business. I urge everyone of all ages to come out and enjoy this spectacular event and also all of the shopping and dining choices in downtown Comox.” A number of businesses on Comox Avenue have specials and sales for this special weekend.

The hockey action starts Friday afternoon and goes right through the entire weekend. There will be lots of other activities and events to coincide with the hockey. The Comox BIA is hosting a Kids Zone which includes the popular Bounce-Mania (Saturday only), face painting, carnival games, magic, clowns and balloons. Look for the Kids Zone across from the Town circle.

Also for the kids, Crown Isle is sponsoring a hockey shooting clinic for three different age groups for Saturday only. The Glacier Kings will be sharing their expertise with young hockey players on how to make their shots count. Free T-shirts will be given to participants. Pre-register at Comox Recreation for this free event.

The Lorne Hotel is gone but you can still sip a cold one and enjoy some BBQ food on the site of the old hotel, which will be transformed into a lively beer garden.

With much of Comox Avenue closed, parking will be more of a challenge, which makes riding a bike to Comox a sensible, fun and healthy mode of transport. And if you are worried about where to safely leave your bike while enjoying the festivities, there will be a free lock-up area (donations gratefully accepted) in the Town of Comox parking lot.  This is made possible by The Comox Valley Cycling Coalition who are kindly offering their service and expertise. The bike compound will be available on Saturday and Sunday (June 18 & 19) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

With Shellfish Festivities in Marina Park and the road hockey on Comox Avenue, the cycling compound is ideally situated to take in all of the action. And with all of calories you have expended while riding your bike you can enjoy a few more delectable treats without a guilty conscience.
