Six members of Toshikan Martial Arts children's karate travelled to the Coastal Martial Arts Open Tournament in Port Alberni last Saturday and came home with six podium medals (first and second place finishes).

Tristan Stushnoff, Van Cudmore, Tenzin Gray, Judah Lidell, Van Patterson and Drew Wootton faced some very experienced opponents in kata and sparring competitions, and for a couple of Toshikan students, it was their first tournament.

"We're not a large karate school, like many of the Lower Mainland schools who came to the competition, but I have a highly dedicated group of students, and the children who participated in the CMA Open represented our school and the Valley well by showing strong spirit and great respect for fellow participants and the martial art itself," said Toshikan instructor Mac Newton.
