Towhees hosting Armada in final league game Thursday

Vanier senior boys basketball team hosting North Islands on Feb. 21-22

The Vanier Towhees are preparing to host the North Island senior boys basketball championship. Action runs Feb. 21-22, with teams and schedule TBA.

Their final tune-up is Thursday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m.) when they host the Alberni Armada in their final league game. "This is a rematch of a tough loss in January, and is also Senior Night, commemorating the fine high school careers of eight of our finest," said Vanier coach Larry Street.

Last Saturday, the Towhees ventured to Nanaimo to take on the Wellington Wildcats. "It was a well-played game by both teams, and a close one throughout," Street said.

The Wildcats, though, were in big trouble midway through the second half when their best player Tyler Radelja went down, and with both he and their big centre out due to injuries, the Towhees never looked back. Everyone played for Vanier and Joss Biggins led the way with his season average 21 points.

Bryce Olsen added 10 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, as did Jakob Jungwirth, to carry Vanier to a 42- 39 rebounding edge. Colton Derycke played his normally feisty game and chalked up eight fine assists while a solid effort from Foster Dewitt gave the team nine points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal.

"Playing a well-coached team just before two big league games (Vanier played Cowichan on Tuesday, with result unavailable at press time) is crucial to continue the promising move to successful playoffs," said Street, noting the Towhees play their next three games at home.
