The U18 Comox Valley Evolution soccer squad once again denied Cowichan a provincial berth, defeating their Island rival 2-0 in the Island Cup final Saturday in Victoria.

The Evolution had denied Cowichan provincial berths in 2009 and 2011, and an Island Cup championship in 2009.

In a fast-paced, physical game with plenty of end-to-end action, Saturday's match was scoreless at half-time. Just minutes into the second half, Rebecca Williams fired a long, high shot from outside the 18-yard box that went over the outstretched arms of the Cowichan keeper. Following the kick-off, the Evolution gained possession and Brittany Tilley placed a cross over several defenders to Williams, who volleyed the ball into the back of the net for her second goal of the game.

The Evolution, despite having just two subs and several players nursing injuries, dominated most of the second half. Keeper Jen Dyer made some big saves in a well-earned shutout.

Tilley was named team MVP by the Cowichan coaches.

The Evolution is coached by Craig Tilley and Ron Quilter.

The next goal for the team is to medal at provincials.
