Undefeated Bukwas wins second belt

Chris “Bukwas” Anderson bumped his record to 6-0 by defeating Jared Revel of Langley June 24 at a mixed martial arts event in Coquitlam. By doing so, the Courtenay fighter won the Battlefield Fight League (BFL) middleweight title. Because he also holds the welterweight belt, Bukwas becomes the first BFL fighter to hold two titles simultaneously in different weights.

In Saturday’s contest, the ringside doctor stopped the fight between the first and second rounds.

“Poor guy, it looked like he (Revel) went through a lawnmower or something,” Anderson said. “The elbows seemed to do the most damage.”

But there was a moment when Revel caught Bukwas with a triangle choke.

“He’s a black belt in jiu-jitsu, so I found myself in deep trouble. But I managed to find a way out, and after that he kind of just faded away,” Anderson said. “It was a pretty exciting round. There was wrestling, some takedowns, but mostly it was me just boxing him up. I didn’t get hurt too bad. Overall a pretty good night.”

The BFL has told Anderson to prepare himself for an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) card in Edmonton in September, in case an opening presents itself.

“No guarantees but maybe a short-notice fight comes up, or an injury.”

Fighting — and beating — a UFC veteran would help Bukwas get noticed.

“It kind of shows that you’re ready for the next step.”

Anderson and his girlfriend, Kailyn Regner, have started a non-profit organization called the Bukwas Foundation, which sponsors young athletes and assists organizations. Their next venture is to visit the community of Ahousaht, off the coast of Tofino, where they plan to donate sports gear to a youth centre.
