The 2011 Investors Group Yew Bat tournament wrapped up at Bill Moore Park late Sunday afternoon, bringing to a close another successful weekend of baseball. The weekend was not hot, it was not wet, and there were no broken bones! Within the six-team 35+ division, Victoria and Brian McLean Yankees battled to make the final on Sunday afternoon. After a hard-fought, sometimes heated, struggle, the Yankees regained the crown that has eluded the team for a couple of years. Victoria, defending champs, faced a long drive home after being throttled on this final day – see you next year! The four-team 45+ division, in its third year of existence, featured two out-of-town teams – Sointula and Burnaby Buzzards. Although the play was competitive, the tempers were rather short and nerves a touch tattered by the final. Burnaby had a scare in the semifinals as they squeaked past the pesky Cubs on Sunday morning. In the final, the Buzzards soared early, scoring a couple in the first inning. After a controversial call around a balk situation, the Indians got a second chance to score but squandered that chance as well. The Buzzards were circling! But, as often happens, a change of pitchers brought a change of fortunes. The Indians reloaded their offence and put the boots to the visiting team in the last half of the game. Final score was 10 -5. A trip to the podium for Happys, and a long ferry ride home for the Buzzards – see you next year! It’s good to keep the hardware in the Valley! Regular season Komoux Masters Real Baseball League play resumes this week at Highland Field. Sunday will have Brian McLean Yankees and the D&D Construction Cardinals hook up at 9:30, Dundee Giants and Happy Source for Sports Indians at 12 noon, Fisher Realty Blue Jays against the Investors Group Astros at 2:, and the Courtenay Plumbing Twins taking on the Griffen Cubs at 4:30. See you at the park! – Komoux Masters Real Baseball League
