Guided by environmental consultants Current Environmental, the Town of Comox and Brooklyn Creek Watershed Society and undertook a restoration effort last weekend.
The roadway and surroundings at Noel Avenue at the Gaglardi Academy had undergone a complete rebuild where it crosses the creek, as the water flow was on the verge of causing serious issues to a couple of adjacent properties.
This required a new culvert and considerable streambed and shoreline disruption. Much of the previous restoration work (renaturalization) was undone and needed to be started from scratch in order to have a healthy and beautiful natural portion of the stream again in the future.
Volunteers took to the banks to rebuild the streambed.
“Of note, Al Fraser, the superintendent of Comox parks was on hand and he is retiring at the end of this year,” said BCWS president, James Vasilyev. “He has been instrumental in supporting the enhancement and restoration/protection of the Creek for years and has been a pleasure for us to work with as has been Rupert Wong and Caitlin O’Neill of Current Environmental.”
