The Comox Valley RCMP is launching the Safe Place Program. This program creates a partnership between local businesses and the RCMP to provide a place for victims or witnesses of crimes involving the LGBTQ community to call police and wait for officers to arrive.
The goal of this program is to provide security and safety to the LGBTQ community when they may be apprehensive about calling police to report a crime.
“Many crimes involving our LGBTQ community are not reported. We want all members of our community to feel safe coming to the police with any concerns by providing them with a safe place to do so,” said Cst. Monika Terragni, Safe Place liaison officer for the Comox Valley RCMP.
The Comox Valley RCMP is looking for businesses and organizations to participate in this program. Business owners will sign a pledge which agrees to educate employees about the program, to provide a safe place to call police and to allow callers to stay until officers arrive. Businesses will be provided with a poster and/or sticker to display on the front of their business.
