Comox Valley students Zoe Milligan and Abigail Warren recently left home for a year abroad.

The girls are students at Vanier Secondary and Highland Secondary respectively. They have headed overseas to complete a cultural year of studies in other countries, courtesy of Rotary’s International Student Exchange program.

Warren is going to a small town south of Venice and Milligan has landed in Taiwan. Both girls have a parent who has previously been on youth exchange so they are well versed on what to expect, the challenges ahead and the immense benefits they will enjoy.

Rotary has offered student exchanges all over the world since 1929. The philosophy behind the student exchange is to foster goodwill and communication through our youth.

The Rotary Youth Exchange program is run through 33,000 Rotary Clubs around the world. The exchange program gives young people a chance to experience life in another part of the globe while continuing their education. The benefits are immense and cannot be underestimated. Participating clubs agree to house and care for incoming students, involve them in the community and expose them to all that their particular community can offer. It really is the opportunity of a lifetime!
