The Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation and the Forest Enhancement Society of B.C. work together to improve wildlife habitat. Locally, the groups have funded projects to estimate cougar populations and to re-establish Vancouver Island marmots.
HCTF recently announced $9.2 million in funding for 180 projects around the province — 31 of them on Vancouver Island.
Comox Valley initiatives include:
•Taylor’s Checkerspot Butterfly Project on Denman and Hornby islands;
•Tsolum River Gravel Bar Restoration;
•Wilderness school (connecting kids with nature): Ecole Puntledge Park;
•17 Go Grants to schools, to underwrite costs of busing students to natural sites;
•Two HCTF education facilitators.
