Council of Canadians advocating for health care

The Comox Valley Chapter of the Council of Canadians participated in a national day of action for a 2014 health accord.

The Comox Valley Chapter of the Council of Canadians together with the Campbell River Chapter joined with health care professionals, pro-medicare allies, health coalitions, and citizens’ groups across Canada in a national day of action for a 2014 health accord.

In December, the federal government announced that it would cut the health care budget by $31 billion from 2017-2024. Since then, the Harper government has walked away from the negotiating table.

The next meeting on the Accord will take place July 25 to 27 at the Council of the Federation meeting with only first ministers at the table.

On July 18, one week before this important meeting, Canadians sent their premiers an important message: Demand that Harper return to the negotiating table!

The Council of the Federation meeting could be the last time the first ministers meet to discuss medicare before the 2014 Accord is finalized. If first ministers don’t act now, we will lose this opportunity to protect, strengthen, and extend medicare.

The Comox Valley and Campbell River Chapters of the Council of Canadians and allies are working to show our opposition to healthcare cuts and weak leadership.

On July 18, in Campbell River at Tyee Plaza, they presented information in a fun and entertaining way using umbrellas saying We’ve Got You Covered to get the attention of Premier Clark.
