Dedicated Comox seniors dance in rain, wind

Every Friday for 13 years, Ann Marie Lisch’s dance fitness class in Comox has attracted a dedicated number of attendees, mostly senior women, who are not about to let a little rain and wind spoil their fun.

Ten dancers showed up to Friday morning’s class at Marina Park. The previous Friday had 17 participants. Both mornings were wet and cold.

“Some of these women have been coming since the first class, every Friday, no matter what,” Lisch said. “These are women who are like, ‘We want to be alive, we want to be vibrant.’ How invigorating is this?”

The eldest dancer is 82.

“Most of them are 65 and up,” said Lisch, who teaches Nia, a holistic dance practice that incorporates martial arts, yoga, mindfulness and jazz.

Lisch hopes to soon return the class to the d’Esterre House, which has been closed since March due to COVID. The group had been dancing in Filberg Park before switching to the marina.

The class meets at 10 a.m. every Friday. All are welcome.
