LUSH (Let Us Share the Harvest) Valley Food Action Society invites the public to its 2016/2017 annual general meeting, featuring keynote speaker, Peter Sinclair.

The event, which will take place on Oct. 16 - World Food Day - starts at 6 p.m. at North Island College, Tyee Hall Room 203.

“We will start by highlighting the successes of our last year and end the evening with a free and inspirational presentation by Peter Sinclair,” said LUSH Valley executive director Maurita Prato.

Sinclair, the executive director of Nanaimo Loaves and Fishes, will be sharing their exciting progress in the City of Nanaimo with a food recovery program they started called Food4U. “The Food4U project rescues fresh perishable foods from grocery stores and other food businesses and distributes them,” said Prato. “In the first two years of operation, over $1.6 million worth of food was recovered. The idea is to collaborate with businesses and organizations to bring more fresh healthy foods to people and programs who need it most, while keeping food out of the landfill.”

“There are similar larger scale projects happening in communities across North America including the Food Rescue Project and Food Share Network in Victoria,” says Andrea Cupelli, LUSH Valley program manager. “We know that food recovery is already happening in this community and we hope this talk will kick off more discussion about the food rescue potential in the Comox Valley.”

There will be a short discussion after the presentation to ask the questions: Is the Food4U model relevant in the Comox Valley? How are we already engaging in food recovery? How can we collaborate to bring more healthy food out of the waste stream to people and organizations who need it?

All social service agencies that serve healthy food in their programming and/or to their clients are strongly encouraged to attend. Even if you are not available to join the full AGM please consider joining us for the talk at 7 p.m.
