The Old House Hotel & Spa Mayor’s Charity Golf Classic is teeing up for the 10th annual event Sept. 7 at Crown Isle.

To date, the tournament has raised nearly $250,000 for various Comox Valley charities, including l’Arche Comox Valley, the Child Development Association, Dawn to Dawn: Action on Homelessness Society, Habitat for Humanity and the Salvation Army. The event has also contributed thousands towards the welcome sign on the highway, the plane at the Vancouver Island Visitor Centre, and towards bursaries at North Island College.

“Whatever we raise, they (NIC) get from the government another 30 to 35 per cent on top of that,” said event organizer Roger McKinnon. “We give three bursaries away right now at $1,800 a year.”

Comox Mayor Paul Ives, Cumberland Mayor Leslie Baird and Courtenay Mayor Larry Jangula will all participate in the tourney, which is a Texas Scramble format.

There will be plenty happening at each hole — food, drink and prizes, including cars, seadoos and a boat. There’s also a million-dollar hole-in-one opportunity.

“Every hole will have something to offer,” McKinnon said. “Two years ago we had two hole-in-ones. One (prize) was a car and one was $20,000 cash.”

This year’s tourney features eight holes-in-one.

About half the money raised comes from the live auction.

Each year, the Mayor’s Classic is a sellout. This year’s event will accommodate 36 teams, or 144 people.

Some of the charities provide volunteers.

Registration is from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the day of the event. Lunch is at 11:30 a.m.

Shot gun tee-off is at 1 p.m. Dinner is served at 7:30 p.m.
