Many years ago, the cooking teacher at Vanier thought it a good idea to provide some Christmas treats for retired teachers 85 and older.
On his own, he made the treats and delivered them.
Fast-forward to Christmas 2010 and the tradition that Mel Thomas started in his classroom at Vanier is alive and well and growing as more retirees reach 85 years of age.
This year, 18 members of the Comox Valley Retired Teachers’ Association (RTA) were visited with packages of treats: jam, loaves, Christmas cake, cookies, fruit and other assorted goodies. RTA members who are no longer living in their own homes receive plants as well as cards.
This year, 16 RTA members baked all of the delicious treats in their own home, donating their time and ingredients. RTA member Gay Davies co-ordinates this major project each year, including arranging for drivers to deliver the packages to the members’ homes. Nine volunteer drivers delivered the packages last month.
The Comox Valley RTA wishes all its members, their families and all other citizens of the Valley a healthy, happy new year.
