On Sunday, May 19, a lone mallard showed up with 22 ducklings at a pond in the Comox Valley.
It is more common for mallards to care for up to 13, but they will adopt abandoned ducklings. There had been another adult with an injured leg who perhaps could not keep up with her brood.
Lifeforce Ocean Friends places posters at various locations to help educate the public about wildlife protection. To help protect newborn mallard ducks, the public is asked not to chase, feed or get close to the ducklings.
