What better way to enjoy the garden than through harvesting its bounty to create delicious dishes using edible flowers and taste-enhancing herbs?
The Comox Valley Horticultural Society is very pleased to be hosting chef Dawn McRae of Custom Gourmet at our next meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 20 at the Florence Filberg Centre. She will be giving a short Powerpoint presentation before launching into a demonstration of the usual and not-so-usual botanical delights one can create.
As an added bonus, Dawn will be bringing platters of these creations for us to taste. A peek at her menu includes: grape truffles with fresh herbs, ras el harnout chicken cups with roses and lavender, rice paper rolled with green salad and fresh flowers (whatever happens to be in bloom, she says), a rose vinaigrette and a tomato tart with an oregano walnut pesto. Mouth watering.
Also scheduled for our June meeting is a second guest speaker. Craig Hare of Premier Tech Biotechnologies will be giving a short Powerpoint presentation and answering questions on MYKE, a mycorrhiza product that can be described as “nature’s umbilical cord”. Mycorrhiza is the original infrastructure from which vegetation grows. This will be an excellent opportunity to learn more about this beneficial symbiotic fungus. Craig will have a demo table with some useful information available at our meeting.
And finally...the June meeting is our Members' Only Plant Sale! Some of our members will have tables set up laden with plants for sale. And if past sales are any indication, there will be some very select plants offered up, so come early.
Everyone is welcome to join us on Monday, June 20 in the Conference Hall at the Florence Filberg Centre at 411 Anderton Rd. Meet and Greet begins at 7 p.m. with coffee, tea and goodies available.
