The Cumberland Community Forest Society (CCFS) and Youth and Ecological Restoration (YER) invite the public to a youth-led tour of the Perseverance Creek corridor on Friday, Aug. 20 at noon. This section of forest was purchased in 2020 and is 225 acres in size.
Two YER youth will be measuring and recording the health of a stand of western redcedars, as well as documenting wildlife trees. Their research findings will be published in a report to help guide CCFS forest management and future land purchases.
Zoe Cilliers, CCFS stewardship and outreach co-ordinator, will lead the ecological research, with Tim Ennis doing the final report. K’omoks First Nation Elder and traditional knowledge keeper Barb Whyte will share the cultural value of Western redcedar with the youth.
Village of Cumberland supervisor of parks, trails and land, Tyler Farley, will discuss recreational trails and wildlife habitat.
This YER, Phase II project is made possible through a funding partnership between the Ministry of Children and Family Development, the Village of Cumberland, the Community Grant Program, and CCFS. The youth will lead a one-hour public tour where they will share their experience and research.
To attend please meet at the Perseverance Creek bridge on Comox Lake Rd. To get there go up Dunsmuir Ave., turn left on Sutton Ave., which turns into Comox Lake Rd. Continue until you get to Perseverance Creek, with wooden railings on either side of the road. We look forward to you joining us.
