50 authors share spotlight at Big Island Bookfest in Courtenay

Record staff

The second Big Island Bookfest brings together 50 local and Island authors into one place.

At this market-style event, patrons can meet authors from several genres including, fantasy, thriller, true life, photography, and children’s.

J P Bailey, founder and director, has put this event together to showcase the amazing array of authors on the Island, and bring together writers and readers. Come down to chat directly with authors and buy their books and related wares. Complimentary face painting for the children from noon to 3 p.m., with readings from children’s authors all day.

Among the local authors in attendance will be Courtenay’s Ken Schultz, who will be launching Rondo, the fourth instalment of the The Songs of Aarda series.

The Songs of Aarda series vividly portrays a world divided, set in a post-apocalyptic society where three species compete for supremacy. Schultz confronts the social and political tensions within this world, diving deeply into themes of power, control, and the abuse of power. The series’ tense, suspenseful mood includes moments of dark humour, creating a unique and immersive reading experience.

Schultz will be signing copies of all four books, and will read from Rondo at 11 a.m. in the Soroptimists Lounge.

The canteen will be open throughout the festival, with proceeds from the canteen going directly to local charities.

Live music, author readings all day, and the creations of paper artist Ray Bartl round out the festivities. Saturday, Oct. 14, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., upper floor of the Florence Filberg Centre (411 Anderton Ave., Courtenay).

Entry by donation. Books for everyone. Patrons are invited to dress up.
