Ahoy mateys, calling all book-a-neers!

Local intergalactic pirate Captain Thunderpants is coming to the library to celebrate the end of Summer Reading Club. Comox Valley libraries will be celebrating kids’ reading accomplishments with events in Cumberland, Comox, and Courtenay Aug. 21 to 23. Captain

Thunderpants will have families singing, dancing and giggling, and cake and refreshments will follow his performance.

Each year, hundreds of Comox Valley kids sign up for the Summer Reading Club at their local library branches. They track their reading throughout the summer, and bring in their reading logs regularly to be entered to win prizes. Kids who fill up their entire reading logs receive a medal from the library.

The Summer Reading Club aims to lessen what is known by educators as the summer slide.

“We know that without regular reading practice over the summer, kids will often go back to school in September with a lower reading level than when they left in June,” says children’s librarian Allison Trumble. “We encourage kids to read through the summer by making it fun and offering incentives. We’ve seen so many kids excited about reading this summer, it’s incredibly rewarding.”

The Cumberland Library event will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 21 at 10:30 a.m., the Comox Library event will be Wednesday, Aug. 22 at 10:30 a.m., and the Courtenay Library event will be Thursday, Aug. 23 at 10:30 a.m.
