Comox Valley Art Gallery’s Spring Film Series lineup announced, with trailers

The Comox Valley Art Gallery’s Spring Film Series starts Wednesday, March 6 with Joan Baez: I am Noise.

The series of eight films will run every Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the Landmark Cinemas, 2265 Cliffe Ave., Courtenay, until April 24.

For this series, all advance tickets and series passes will be sold online at cvag.tickit.ca.

Regular tickets are $17 for each film, or $16 for CVAG members. A pass for all eight films is $119, or $112 for CVAG members.

The 2024 spring series features eight films from the Toronto International Film Festival Film Circuit:

March 6 – Joan Baez: I Am Noise

After performing music for more than 60 years, singer-songwriter Joan Baez reflects on her history-making career and reveals her personal struggles (USA).

March 13 – My Mother’s Men

A woman sets out to honour her dead mother’s wish that her ashes be distributed amongst her five ex-husbands to scatter in a place most significant to each of them (Canada).

March 20 – Solo

Set in Montreal’s vivacious drag scene, this tender character study from writer-director Sophie Dupuis focuses on a talented young performer whose past and present merge in unexpected ways. (Canada).

March 27 – The Teacher’s Lounge

A new junior high teacher becomes an amateur investigator in order to unmask a thief active in the school, but the roots and consequences of the case run deep (Germany).

April 3 - Shayda

Writer-director Noora Niasari’s fiction feature debut stars a dazzling Zar Amir Ebrahimi — winner of Cannes’ Best Actress award for Holy Spider — as a survivor of domestic violence seeking a fresh start in a country far from her Iranian home (Australia).

April 10 – The Zen Diary

Adapted from Tsutomu Mizukami’s book, this gentle, thoughtful drama considers the importance of aligning one’s life with the natural world’s flavours and rhythms (Japan).

April 17 – Flora and Son

The latest from writer-director John Carney features a revelatory performance from Eve Hewson as a young mother trying to connect with her teenage son through a shared love of music (Ireland, USA).

April 23 - Monster

Acclaimed Japanese author Kore-eda Hirokazu returns to his homeland with a powerful yet delicate story of love, humanity and a moral tale about school bullying (Japan).

All advance tickets will be sold online. Purchasing in advance is strongly recommended since most films sell out. People can try to purchase tickets for $17, cash only, at the Theatre at the time of the screening, but only as available seats allow.
