Courtenay church’s next fundraising concert features keyboardist Doc Fingers

It’s time to boogie with Doc Fingers and Blaine Dunaway playing “boogie-woogie, blues, and happy jazz” at a fundraising concert on Friday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. at St. George’s United Church, at 505 6th St. Courtenay.

The concert will raise money for the Comox Valley Food Bank and St. George’s United Church. Tickets are $25 in advance on Eventbrite at bit.ly/48N3n4G; also at the church office in advance or $30 at the door.

Guests are encouraged to bring non-perishable donations for the Comox Valley Food Bank, as well. There will be a collection box at the door.

Fingers, who earned his title while playing with the Ronnie Hawkins band in the 1970s, has played with some seriously big names, including David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Frank Zappa, Rita Coolidge, Bo Diddley, Jim Byrnes, and many others.

To round out the duo, improvising musician Dunaway will play his violin and trumpet—adding texture and depth to the tunes.

Dunaway has accompanied hundreds of musicians in numerous genres of music at live performances and in recording studios across the country and has played in most of the finest big bands in Western Canada.

After years of travelling with their music, both musicians now call the Comox Valley home.

St. George’s raises funds through a variety of events during the year to benefit local non-profits. In 2023, the church donated more than $40,000 to community groups, including Habitat for Humanity, LUSH, the Comox Valley Food Bank, the Coldest Night of the Year, the Comox Valley Child Development Association, the Transition Society, and many others.
