Denman gallery displays artistic spectrum

June at the Denman Island Summer Gallery is a testament to the astonishingly broad spectrum of artistry and talent on our island, with no fewer than 14 artists, three shows, and two openings!

Our first show is Scot Bullick's exhibit, Some-R-Monsters, which opens on the sum-R evening of May 31.

Scot is a Calgary artist who became a year-round Denman resident last summer. This is his first show here.

He has been doodling on school books or whatever came to hand, ever since he can remember, and monster faces seemed to sprout spontaneously whenever he put pen to paper. He moved on to constructing them, but always felt he should do something more "serious."

Luckily for us, the monsters won, and Scot conceded, like the immortal Popeye, "I yam what I yam."

The show consists of 19 to 30 pieces varying in size, mostly 12 to 15 inches across, some longer and thinner, some quite small. Most are plexiglass; some are wood, stainless steel, or aluminum. One piece is done on an old street sign from a junkyard.

If you want to visit the monsters of summer, the Arts Centre is open every day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The artist may be in attendance.
